There are times in life as a photographer that you have this overwhleming urge to photograph someone. When I met Barbara, I knew I wanted to photograph her, but it took some time before that occurred.
In 2006, a friend of mine introduced me to a hair salon in town, and urged me to schedule an appointment with Barbara, and that she did amazing work. So, I called and made an appointment, and found out for myself, my friend was right--she really did, and still does, AMAZING work!
I knew for a long time that I wanted to photograph Barbara, but there was never a time that felt right to say anything. Years into our client-hairdresser relationship, and many hours logged of conversation between shampooing, dying and cutting of hair went by before Barbara was pregnant with her second child. She had mentioned early in her pregnancy that she wished she had good photographs during her first pregnancy. What a great segway into saying that I would LOVE to make some photographs for her that time around--and so we did, one very hot Memphis summer morning.
With much eagerness I have been blessed to be able to continue to watch through my camera lens documenting her family: watching Owen and Zoe grow up, and Tony and Barbara grow together. Photographing their family has been as if I were photographing my own family. Time spent together photographing always seems to pass quickly with much ease and whim. I can't wait to see what great things this little family grows into and does together in the future!
